This entry is part 50 of 67 in the series Tehillim Themes

This psalm is about the Jewish nation’s merits which brought them to Eretz Yisrael and their sins which made them lose it. The Torah is the blueprint of the world and thus when it is being followed then the Jews have all of the privileges enumerated by it. When it is not being followed then the Jews find themselves in trouble.

David’s Honesty

King David was a most honest person and always strived to ensure that his words were most accurate and precise. It is for this reason that David expresses the resilience of the Jewish nation and the cry out to Hashem as well. David, who stood for honesty, was in the position to say things as they were. David states that the Jews never give up hope or forget that their salvation, protection and success comes only from Hashem. At the same time David cries for Hashem’s attention as well.

Awake

David extolled Hashem to awake and care for the nation. David was afraid that the Jewish enemies would accuse the Jewish God of being asleep and ignoring His nation. The Ramchal explains that Hashem treats the Jews with the same approach that they are treating him. If the Jews go haphazardly with Hashem then He can retaliate in kind. If the Jews focus on being conscience about their responsibilities then they can accomplish great things. This would grant them full protection and care from Hashem. David also acknowledges Hashem’s great mercy and kindness. Hashem simply waits for us to turn towards Him and he is ready to save us and care for our every need.

Source

It is for this reason that the sons of Korach were the authors of this original psalm. They saw the fairness in Hashem’s actions and they admitted that they and their family were given just treatment. The theme of justice and care is what Hashem stands for when dealing with all situations.
