Last Week’s Question: Siyum Party

From where does it emerge the concept of making a Siyum, celebration, when completing a section in Torah learning?

Our Answer:

See Shabbos (118b) and Shir Hashirim Rabbah (1:9).

Abayeh used to make a party for any student that completed a tractate. The commentaries explain that he wanted to show them how much to celebrate and value Torah. He wanted their happiness to encourage them further.

Just as when King Shlomo gained his wisdom he made a party, so too when we achieve understanding in our learning it is a call for a celebration.
